Practitioner applying cupping during a recovery session at Active Performance Clinic

Who recovery sessions are for

Runners in a marathon or City2Surf build, gym members in a heavy strength block, social football, netball and touch players who back up every week, cyclists, swimmers and anyone whose training has outrun their recovery. Most of our recovery clients are not injured. They are sore, heavy-legged and stiff, and they want to train again on Thursday.

What a session includes

  • Sports massage flush. Moderate, rhythmic work through the calves, hamstrings, glutes, quads and back to move fluid, settle tone and restore range. Deeper trigger point work only where the tissue needs it. See sports massage.
  • Cupping. Static or sliding cups over congested, tight tissue, especially the thoracic back, glutes and ITB. See cupping.
  • Assisted stretching and mobility. Hips, hamstrings, calves and thoracic spine, with the two or three drills that matter most for your sport to take home.
  • Red light therapy. An optional 20-minute session on the sorest area, added to the appointment for $30. See red light therapy.
  • A load check. A few minutes on what you did, what is next, and whether anything is quietly turning from soreness into an injury.

When to book

The sweet spot after an event is 24 to 72 hours, once sharp soreness has settled. During a training block, a recovery session every two to four weeks on a planned light day keeps the tissue moving and gives your therapist a chance to spot a calf, hip flexor or shoulder that is starting to tighten. Before an event, book a lighter session one to two days out and leave the deep work for another week.

Performance Recovery Package

$530 for three standard follow-up sessions, each with a red light therapy session, saving $40. Existing clients. Available in clinic only. Master Practitioner surcharge applies if requested. Details on the pricing page.

Not just sore?

If one spot is sharply painful, swollen, or not improving over a few days, that is an injury rather than recovery, and we assess it as one. Numbness, a hot swollen calf, or an inability to bear weight need a doctor first.

Recovery FAQs

What is a recovery session?

A follow-up appointment aimed at recovery rather than a specific injury: a sports massage flush of the muscles you have loaded, cupping where the tissue is congested, assisted stretching, and a 20-minute red light therapy session added if you want it. Your therapist checks how you have pulled up and adjusts the mix.

When should I book after a race or a big session?

Twenty-four to seventy-two hours afterwards, once the sharp soreness has settled. Booking a recovery session on a planned light day during a heavy block works even better than waiting for soreness.

How do I book one?

Book a Follow Up Appointment online (45, 60 or 90 minutes) and mention recovery in the booking notes, or add the 20-minute red light therapy option at the desk. Existing clients can buy the Performance Recovery Package in clinic for three recovery sessions with red light included.

Is a recovery session claimable on my health fund?

The remedial massage appointment is claimable through HICAPS if your extras cover includes remedial massage. See our health fund page for how it works.

Can I come in if I am injured rather than just sore?

Yes, but tell us. If one area is sharply painful, swollen or not improving, we assess it as an injury first and treat it as such. See our sports injuries page.
